The brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born in the South Hessian town of Hanau. They spent their childhood in Steinau an der Straße, a small village situated in the Kinzig valley. For their secondary education they moved to Kassel and from there to Marburg to study law, Jacob in 1802, Wilhelm in 1803. Afterwards they returned to Kassel, where they worked as librarians. In 1829 they accepted positions at the University of Göttingen and moved there in the very same year. After a further stay in Kassel between 1837 and 1841, they spent the last years of their lives in Berlin, where they were also laid to rest.
